Aboriginal Education

Aboriginal Education
Parafield Gardens High School supports Aboriginal students from Years 7 to 12. Our Aboriginal Education team includes three Aboriginal Secondary Education Transition Officers (ASETOs), an Aboriginal Education Senior Leader and an Aboriginal Education Coordinator.

Celebrating Culture
Each year, we recognise and celebrate important events such as Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. These events provide valuable opportunities to share Aboriginal histories, cultures and perspectives with the whole school community.

Community Partnerships
We work closely with external organisations to support students, families and staff, helping to remove barriers to education and promote successful outcomes. The Aboriginal Education Room is open each morning from 8:00am to 8:30am for families to meet with the Aboriginal Education team and discuss student learning, wellbeing or any concerns.
Parafield Gardens High School also works with organisations such as the Workabout Centre, which supports students to gain qualifications and employment, and The Wyatt Trust, which may provide financial assistance. Families experiencing difficulties are encouraged to contact a member of the Aboriginal Education team.

SAASTA
The South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) offers young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students engaging learning and personal development opportunities.
SAASTA is a key part of the Department for Education’s 10-year Aboriginal Education Strategy and aims to improve outcomes for Aboriginal students and families. The program builds on school-based learning by providing opportunities for personal growth, cultural connection and leadership.
SAASTA students are encouraged to aim high and set strong expectations for themselves and their peers, particularly in attendance, participation, achievement and behaviour.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who are studying the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) can apply to join SAASTA.
Year 10 students can gain up to 20 SACE credits through Stage 1 Integrated Learning and Stage 1 Aboriginal Studies.

Year 11 and 12 students can gain a maximum of 20 SACE credits studying Stage 2 Integrated Learning, Stage 2 Health and Wellbeing or Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies, which are offered on a rotating cycle.

** Please note that students can only undertake one Stage 2 Integrated Learning subject towards an ATAR pattern. It is important to check Year 12 subject patterns to ensure there are no preculsions towards achieving an ATAR.

Description

SAASTA Connect is a program developed by the South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Years 7 to 9. The program focuses on enhancing school attendance and fostering positive engagement through culturally relevant activities that emphasize cultural identity, leadership, literacy, and sports.

Participating schools collaborate with SAASTA to deliver a curriculum that integrates cultural learning with standard educational subjects. This approach helps students connect their personal heritage with academic studies, promoting a deeper understanding of their culture and identity.

By participating in SAASTA Connect in year 9, students work on preparations for transition into senior secondary education within the SAASTA framework, ensuring a supportive and culturally enriching educational journey. Students also undertake preparations for applying for the SAASTA Academy.

Description

In Year 9 Music, you will create, compose, and play music in hands-on activities, using your imagination and skills to make your own sounds. You will investigate and discuss how musicians communicate their ideas through music, and you will experiment with digital tools to compose your own pieces in response to what you learn. You will further improve your ability to read music and practise rehearsing and performing, either by yourself or in a group with others.

Benefits of Studying this Subject:

Music helps learners develop self confidence and self expression as well as creative problem solving and collaboration skills.
Learners must be studying music to access the Instrumental Music program.

In year 9 Drama you will develop more advanced skills in improvisation and stagecraft, leading to the creation of a scripted performance for an audience. You will explore complex ideas and come up with creative responses, making clear and thoughtful choices as you plan, evaluate, and improve your work.

Performing and presenting for an audience develops confidence, communication skills, teamwork and personal identity. You must be willing to take an on stage or backstage role in performances.

In year 9 dance you will build your dance skills and movement ideas by participating in practical dance classes. You will analyse the intended meanings in dance performances by a variety of choreographers and create your own original dance works.

In year 9 Visual Design you will learn about using the design process to explore different types of design, including graphic design, product design, fashion, character design and architecture. You will work with a variety of materials, physical and digital and record your process from the initial design brief to the final result, including coming up with ideas, developing them, evaluating, and refining your work.

English

The study of English enables students at Parafield Gardens High School to develop skills in literacy, critical thinking, communication, analysis and evaluation.

Student literacy capabilities are crucial to their success in all facets of school and working life, and students develop this skill throughout their English studies.

From Years 7 to 10, our students are exposed to a wide range of texts and consider the interrelationships between text, context, audience, and purpose from a range of different perspectives. Students are provided opportunities to reflect, respond and create oral, written and multimodal texts in a range of genres. These skills enable students to better understand and critically evaluate their own values and the constantly evolving world around them. In Year 11, students beginning their SACE select their preferences in English pathways: Essential, Industry or General. In Year 12, there is also an option to study English in Community Life which explores Community Connections with a ‘Literacy for Life beyond school’ approach.

Essential English focuses on building student capacity to respond and communicate effectively in school and life beyond. Industry English prepares them for communication and literacy in the workplace or in vocational education. English provides students with opportunities to analyse the interrelationships within and between texts and examine the language and stylistic features used by authors for a diverse range of purposes and prepares them for further study of English at University.

Students in Year 9 English further engage with the three interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy and the learning builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years. Students will communicate with a diverse range of groups using their key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. They engage with more complex and challenging texts to explore and develop themes of human experience, relationships, global dilemmas and cultural significance in both real-world and fictional settings. They create more complex written, oral and multimodal texts that explore a range of perspectives and experiences. They continue building their language skills to cement the importance of communicating effectively and fluently for learning in and out of school, and for participating in Australian life.

English as an Additional Language or Dialect

Learning Area Overview

English as an Additional Language or Dialect

English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) supports students who speak a language other than Standard Australian English at home. The EALD program aims to increase students’ English proficiency, as measured by the Learning English Achievement and Proficiency (LEAP) Levels. Students may undertake this subject from year 7 through to Stage 2. At SACE level, the subject is called English as an Additional Language (EAL) and students must meet eligibility requirements to enrol.

In EALD lessons, students develop the skills to comprehend and analyse a wide range of texts. They are provided with supported opportunities to create written, oral and multimodal texts for different purposes and contexts. Students are supported to learn and use more academic vocabulary, to use a range of sentence structures and cohesive devices, and to participate confidently in class and group discussions. The skills developed in EALD will support students with their learning across all subject areas.

Description

This subject supports students to develop the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills needed to succeed across all areas of learning. Students will build their understanding of how the English language works, enabling them to confidently use the grammar, vocabulary and text structures required for learning at school. Students will study EALD as an intervention if their language and literacy skills are below LEAP Level 9, if they are recommended by their Year 8 teacher, or if they have recently arrived in Australia.

Benefits of Studying this Subject:

This intervention supports student literacy, helping to build a strong linguistic foundation for learning and community life. This will enable students to use more sophisticated language which will support their academic success. This subject is delivered in addition to their core English class to provide extra support in developing their English language and literacy skills.

Description

Specialist Physical Education is a physically engaging subject, which allows students to explore their physical capabilities by collecting individualised and team data, taking on specialist coaching roles such as tactical, technical, motivational and fitness, and applying movement concepts and strategies to improve performance outcomes and increased movement confidence.

Benefits of Studying this Subject:

Students who are considering pursuing Stage 1 and 2 Physical Education, Sports Studies, Health and Wellbeing and Outdoor Education will benefit from choosing Specialist PE. Students will be extended with increased exposure to biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports psychology, fitness and using a coaching constraints model to improve performance. Students will use Sports Science to analyse and evaluate their performance in a variety of Sport and Physical Activities. Integration of their outside of school sport and recreation commitments will also be encouraged as a way for students to demonstrate their achievement of the learning.
Future career paths include; Physical education, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, sports psychology, dietetics and nutrition, statistical analysis, exercise physiology and sports science.

Description

Specialist soccer provides students a pathway to access the Australian Curriculum Year 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education curriculum with a Soccer focus. Students cannot study both Specialist Soccer and Mainstream HPE. Students need to demonstrate a level of talent or coachability to be included in the subject.

Benefits of Studying this Subject:

Students who are accepted into the Specialist Soccer program will have access to specialist equipment and coaching. They will represent the school in School, Vista and Statewide Sport competitions and also be involved in exhibition matches played against local schools in our partnership.

You will be exposed to an array of career pathways in the physical activity area and solidify the possible pathways that interest you. Completion of coaching and umpiring qualifications are an option which can lead to casual employment and further opportunities.

Description

Physical Education and Health are combined and assessed across both years 9 and 10. Physical Education and Health aims to develop knowledge around Training Methods, Data and Feedback, 21st Century Health Problems, Cultural Games and Shine SA – sexual health and relationships. Choosing this subject will provide you with both practical and theory elements of learning with both individual and group assessments throughout the year. Students will demonstrate leadership, fair play and cooperation across a range of movement and health contexts as well as applying important decision-making and problem-solving skills in relation to their own and others health, safety and wellbeing. Developing these skills will assist in a good understanding of how to improve communication, what it means to be healthy, how to be healthy, and obtaining positive grades at a senior level for Health and Physical Education.

Students who choose Physical Education will expect to learn through movement while exploring different skills, techniques and the cultural significance and history of physical activity and games in Australia compared to around the world. For the health component, students will research and learn how different lifestyles affect our health, the importance of physical activity and safe relationship health.

Humanities and Social Sciences

At Parafield Gardens High School our Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum is focused on the study of human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts.

We focus on developing essential skills through the investigation of a wide range of phenomena, using argument and reasoning to ensure students become both critical and creative thinkers. Our curriculum is divided into four core subjects from years 7-9 focusing on History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Business and Economics. In year 10 students will study a semester of History as well as the compulsory Exploring Identities and Futures.

Students studying HaSS in Year 9 will examine specific historical learning topics including: Making and Transforming the Australian Nation (1750-1914) and World War I (1914- 1918). Practical and Challenging Experiences (PACE) is designed to provide students with opportunities to harness and develop their personal and social skills through hands-on and experiential learning. The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework is used to understand and structure learning. Students will help plan their own excursions, write children’s books to read to the primary school, and support the community. Assessment is not summative, rather learning is based on the Personal and Social Capability. Students are instead assessed on their personal development and achievement of personal goals throughout the year.

Students design and manufacture practical projects using materials such as timber and metal while developing fabrication skills and safe workshop practices. Students follow the design process to investigate a problem, generate ideas, produce a project and evaluate their final product.

Students may design and build projects such as small furniture pieces, for example a timber table with metal legs, or other practical products that combine different materials and fabrication techniques.
